Father’s Day was a bit different this year.
Normally, the boys are home and we have a low-key day. And in the afternoon there is cooking on the grill, hanging out around on the patio, and other outdoor activities.
And, for several years, Riley was a part of my Father’s Day too. He passed away last October. Best. Dog. Ever. I miss him every day.
This year, both boys were away.
The oldest was with his girlfriend — visiting her grandparents. A noble act, for sure.
The youngest was about 3 hours away. He was awarded a grant to study fetal alcohol syndrome this summer on his university’s campus. It’s a great opportunity for him — even though it would have been nice to have him home.
Here’s the Father’s Day card he made and sent to me:
Yeah. Pretty sweet, huh?
There’s not a store-bought card in the universe that could out-do this one.
I love it!
I’m certainly not a perfect parent. (I don’t think such a thing exists, really.) But I try my best to be a teacher and cheerleader for my kids.
My wife and I have always stressed the need to make good choices. It’s been a blessing to see the boys follow that suggestion as they’ve gone from little boys to young men.
I am proud of my boys.
And that’s enough to make my Father’s Day a special day.
